Uprising Book Review

I just finished the memorable and meaningful historical fiction book Uprising, by Margaret Peterson Haddix, and so I've decided to write a review about it.

The book is about the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Strike and Fire, where underprivileged, underpaid "shirtwaist girls" worked to make a living for themselves and their families. Many of the girls, like two of the protagonists in this story, saved most of their money to bring their families home from their mother countries, and others worked to pay for themselves and their families in the slums.

When you first open the book, you know that there will be a fire in the newly introduced factory of the Triangle, and you wait for it to happen. The first chapter introduces a Mrs. Livingston and her young friend Harriet. Harriet is begging Mrs. Livingston to tell her the story of the fire because her father never told her what happened, and Mrs. Livingston finally obliged. From that point on, excepting the last chapter, which is about Mrs. Livingston and Harriet again, you enter the lives of Russian Jew striker and suffragist Yetta, Italian poor immigrant Bella, and rich and curious Jane, (who was born and raised in America). The chapters go back and forth between them, chronicling their lives, about their strive for work and family, justice and liberty.

The first and last chapters are the prologue and epilogue, and I promise, the epilogue is very unexpected and satisfying.

I cried a few times in the book, and suggest the book for teens, especially girls. I thoroughly enjoyed it, especially since at Excelsior, we will be talking about this time in history, and in addition to the historical accuracy throughout the entire book, there was a captivating plotline being followed, tying all the loose ends together.

The plot twists in the end, and what I thought was going to happen was actually a little different. The resolution was so amazing for me, and the honor of the girl(s) who survived was just spectacular. Like I said, the epilogue was so satisfying.

Before I read the book, the author, Margaret Peterson Haddix, was one of my favorite authors, writing Just Ella, and Palace of Mirrors. I highly recommend this book and add it to my ever-growing list of favorites. 😊😄😄😊💖💖

Once Again, Haven't Posted for Awhile

I am really bad about this. I will try to post more often than not.

First order of business: I just read through all my posts. All of them.

Second order of business: Doesn't 2017 sound/look futuristic? Yeah, I know it is 2017, but sevens make things sound different to me. Like 37 sounds officially old, much older than 36.

That is just my opinion.
